CBD and Hangovers
If you drink, chances are you've experienced a hangover. What was initially a fun night out turns into a groggy morning with a plethora of not-so-fun side effects: headache, nausea, dizziness, lethargy, and more. On top of that, hangovers often carry over into the rest of the day, making for a less productive afternoon.
Many people traditionally turn to Advil, comfort food, and lots of water. However, as the buzz around CBD continues to grow, more are finding relief through this simple cannabinoid. But what does it help with?
A 2018 study proves promising on the headache front, finding that CBD has the potential to ease the nervous system’s pain response thanks to the CB1 receptors found in the brain. On top of that, when CBD interacts with CB2 receptors, it may decrease inflammation caused by a headache. While more research is needed, we’ll happily indulge in a tincture the morning after to see for ourselves!
CBD may also help nausea, as a 2011 study shows. Findings reveal that—in rodents—vomiting significantly decreased as cannabinoid receptors were activated. The research concluded that through this activation, CB1 receptors are capable of suppressing nausea and vomiting by involving the 5HT-1A receptors in the brainstem (AKA, the serotonin receptors). While this study wasn’t specifically aimed at the correlation between CBD and hangovers, it still shows the positive impact that CBD may provide.
Of course, CBD isn’t a cure-all. Take precautions—like drinking plenty of water and getting extra sleep the following night—can help mitigate the symptoms of a hangover.
